General Membership: Membership in AUECO is open on an individual basis to export control officers and other employees who are responsible for the administration of export, import, and trade sanctions regulations at degree granting institutions of higher education having their primary location within the United States or if they meet the criteria for eligibility of Affiliated Organizations as defined in the Bylaws. Prospective members must have responsibilities in at least 5 of the following areas to qualify for membership in AUECO:

  1. Serves as Empowered Official or university point of contact for export control issues
  2. Is responsible for export control training and outreach program
  3. Implements and manages the export control program
  4. Develops institutional policy and procedures for export control
  5. Provides review and advice or final approval of export control agreements, certifications or clauses provided by sponsors, vendors, suppliers or other parties
  6. Provides review and advice or final approval on export control issues stemming from visa applications
  7. Performs or coordinates export control technical assessments to determine the Export Control Classification Number, U.S. Munitions List Category and subparagraph, or other relevant designation under the applicable export control regulation
  8. Is responsible for ongoing (post-approval) export control compliance monitoring
  9. Develops and maintains content on export controls for the institutional export control website; and
  10. Regularly monitors the Federal Register, trade publications, agency websites and other public sources for changes or updates to export control laws, regulations, procedures and interpretations and reports on those changes internally.

Individuals are ineligible for General Member status if they are:

  1. Employed by industry, a law firm, a consultancy, or other commercial organization as their primary employment; or
  2. Self-employed or independent contractor as their primary employment; or
  3. Employed in a government position.

Associate Members: From time to time, AUECO members may have career transitions that impact eligibility for membership based on the criteria in the Bylaws. In such cases, the individual may submit a request to obtain Associate membership status.

Senior Associate (Emeritus) Members: Associate Membership is open to an individual basis to AUECO members with at least 3 years of cumulative general membership. Associate Members have full access to AUECO resources but do not have voting rights, are not eligible to serve on the Executive Board, and are not eligible to serve on any Board Related Committees (BRCs).
