About this session

Universities increasingly face pressure to strengthen export control compliance while maintaining efficient research operations. This session presents practical, scalable workflow strategies for integrating export control review into existing research administration processes without creating unnecessary delays. Drawing on real-world implementation experience, the presentation will highlight approaches for embedding screening into proposal routing, faculty travel review, hiring processes, and international collaboration workflows. Attendees will learn how to apply risk-based triage models, leverage existing compliance infrastructure, and establish clear decision points that streamline reviews while maintaining regulatory rigor. The session will also address common bottlenecks, communication challenges, and change management considerations when launching or refining export control processes. Participants will leave with actionable tools and workflow examples that can be adapted to institutions of varying size and research intensity.

Erik Schulz

Erik Schulz is the Assistant Director of Research, Compliance, Integrity and Security (RCIS) at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. In this role he leads the development, implementation, and coordination of the university's export control compliance program and supports institutional efforts related to research security, foreign influence, and compliant with evolving federal requirements. Since entering the field of export compliance in 2021, Erik has worked closely with researchers, administrators and institutional partners to promote secure, compliance and collaborative research activities. Prior to his work in research compliance, Erik served    as a graduate teaching assistant and conducted human subjects research, experiences that provide him with a firsthand understanding of the research enterprise. He holds a Ph.D. in Global Integrative Studies with a specialization in Forensic Anthropology, bringing a multidisciplinary perspective to research security and compliance challenges.
